Star
Delta Controller
The Star Delta Controller has been
designed
for windmill and hydro alternator applications.
What it does: It allows
an alternator with a three phase winding to be switched from
star configuration to delta. The design is
not limited to a star or delta configuration. The
relays turn on or off, at the selected rpm
and it is the users choice what application should be
performed at that point. In any case, it does
allow optimum power to be extracted from
the alternator. The relays in the photo are
standard automobile relays. The board is quite
small, less than 4 sq. in.
The user has the ability
to control at what rpm ( windmill blade speed) the switch
takes place and the duration the windmill
must maintain a specific rpm before that
change takes place. This is done with a 10
pin 5 switch DIP that is located
on the main control board. This give 32 rpm
selectable options from 25 to 800
rpm in 25 rpm steps.(picture and schematic
below are NOT the new Star/Delta. We will update photos.)
The control board
is small and can be built into the alternator
itself if the alternator does not get
excessively
hot or in close proximity to it. The main
chip is a programmed AVR and greatly
simplifies
the circuit. This chip is relatively trouble
free. It is U1 on the schematic. The picture
shows three relays used to control an alternator,
However, they are not required if only one
change is required at the desired rpms.

<>The relay portion of the controller is
separate
from the main board. This
allows many different relay types to be used
and other options such as SCR
circuits to be developed. The alternator
section
is in dotted lines. This is only an
example and actual layout may be different.Relays are standard
automotive relays
and WILL NOT be included with the kit. We buy ours from Allelectronics
at
a greatly reduced price.
